Choice Project #2: Remora

In the second choice project, I wanted to explore an entire new and challenging media which is printmaking. I have learned about printmaking during the art workshop I attended during the past summer and I was interested in it again because of the pictures of printed work on tumblr. I then got the idea of doing something that is related to the popular culture and the media. Nowadays in Thailand, people are very obsessed with foreign snacks and food, especially the well-known ones, for example, Garrett popcorn and Ladurée macarons. There is a trend going on about "pre-ordering" these food that aren't available in Thailand from nearby countries like Singapore, Hongkon or Japan and have the agent ship it to your door. I think that this idea doesn't make sense because there is a reason why people don't typically ship food; they might go bad or get damaged along the way. However, it also matches with the idea behind the printmaking method which is the "repetition" of layers of colors. I chose the reduction print method in order to be able to do a print in many colors as 13 (excluding black and white). The reason why I wanted to make it in various vibrant colors is because my referencing artist is Jen Stark, and her work are always colorful and quirky. This idea of buying foreign food is also made popular by celebrities and their personal social media. When a celebrity or an idol figure posts anything on their social media (e.g. instagram), it often gets a lot of "likes" and it is as if they are promoting the certain thing they're posting. It results in people wanting what the celebrities are able to get and they are also willing to do and spend as much money needed for them to get it just like the Remora or sucker fish which clings to big predator fish such as a shark for its own security.
